Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary In Idukki
The
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary In Idukki, situated about 40 km from Thodupuzha in
the state of Kerala, is famous for the mighty Indian Elephant, which can be
easily spotted roaming around in herds, tramping through the tall grass. Extending
over the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluks of Idukki District, the sanctuary
is home to an amazing variety of flora and fauna. A picturesque lake, situated
in the middle of the park is a good place to spot wild animals in herds, drinking
water. A large number of semi evergreen and deciduous forests make it an ideal
place for the flourishing bird and animal life of the area.
Idukki Kerala Wildlife Sanctuary
Spread over an area of 77 sq. km., the wildlife park is home to an exotic variety
of flora and fauna. Animals found in the park include elephants, bison, sambar,
deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, tiger, wild boar etc.

Kerala Wildlife Sanctuary contain the Reptiles such as Cobra, Viper, Krait and
a large number of other non- poisonous snakes can also be seen. Besides animals
and reptiles, the park is also home to a charming variety of bird species, which
build their nests in the semi evergreen and deciduous forests and can often
be seen freely flying around in the sky. Idukki Kerala Wildlife Sanctuary and
the prominent ones among the bird population include jungle fowl, myna, laughing
thrush, black bulbul, peafowl, woodpecker and kingfisher.
Getting There
By Air - The nearest airport is at Cochin, just 132 km away
from Idukki. Cochin can be easily accessed by regular bus services that connect
it to Idukki.
By Rail - Kottayam is the nearest railhead, which connects
Idukki to rest of the country through a number of super fast and passenger trains.
By Road - Idukki is situated in the state of Kerala, in the
southern part of India. The city can be accessed by a network of well built
roads from all the neighbouring cities in and outside the state.
