The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is beautifully set in the high ranges of the Western Ghats in the state of Kerala. The Maharajah of Travancore is credited for the establishment of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also sometimes known as the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary.
The thick forests of the park include a mix of deciduous, semi evergreen and evergreen trees, which occupy most of the area inside the sanctuary.
The sanctuary was established in the year 1950 and was accorded with the status of a national park in 1982. It was declared a part of the Project Tiger in 1978 to save the fast decreasing population of the wild beast.
