Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
The
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is beautifully set in the high ranges of the Western
Ghats in the state of Kerala. The picturesque lake, set in the middle of the
park, acts as a reservoir that provides drinking water to the wild population
of the area. In this Periyar Wildlife sanctuary, Watch out for the thick grass
cover enveloping the area which surrounds the lake, as you may see a hungry
tiger hiding behind it, quietly waiting for its prey.
The Maharajah of Travancore is credited for the establishment of the Periyar
Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also sometimes known as the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary.
The thick forests of the park include a mix of deciduous, semi evergreen and
evergreen trees, which occupy most of the area inside the sanctuary.
The sanctuary was established in the year 1950 and was accorded with the status
of a national park in 1982. It was declared a part of the Project Tiger in 1978
