A delight to the nature lovers, the Aralam national park is situated on the slopes of the Western Ghats.

It is the best combination of forest and mountains. The elevation gradually increases from 50 meters to 1145 meters.

The highest peak over the Aralam national park that rises to a height of 1145 meters is known as Katti Betta.

A large many number of birds are attracted by the spotless greenery in the Aralam wildlife sanctuary. This also attracts numerous grass eating animals.

Aralam wildlife sanctuary is the northernmost protected area of Kerala state, situated in the southeast part of Kannur District. It lies between 11° 54 and 11° 59 North latitude and 75° 47 and 75° 57 East longitude.

The sanctuary area falls in Aralam, Kelakam and Kottiyoor revenue villages and is located in the Northwest slopes of Western Ghats contiguous with the forests of Coorg (Kodagu) district of Karnataka state.

The PA (Protected Area) is comprised of Aralam Range, the only Range of Aralam wildlife division, which is part of Northern Wildlife Circle (Northern Region) Palakkad. The extent of the sanctuary is 55 km2 .

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary houses various species of evergreen trees like Vellapine (Vateria indica), Mesua ferrea, Mechilus macrantha, Calophyllum elatum, Cullenia rosayroona, Magnifera indica, Toona cillata, Myristica Species, Euphorbia Longana, Strobilanthes.

The common trees in the semi evergreen areas are Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, Hopea parviflora, Largestroemia lanceolata, Xyliaxylocarpa, Mallotus, Philippinensis. The variety of animals and birds found in the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary are different kinds of deer, boars, elephants, bison, leopards, jungle cats and various types of squirrels.

Climate : At the foot hills of Aralam wildlife sanctuary, the temperature varies from 21° C to 40°C. However, at higher altitudes, the temperature varies from 8°C to 25°C.

The Aralam wildilife sanctuary receives quite a large amount of rainfall which sums up to about 3,000 mm annually. From June to August, i.e. during the South-west monsoon, the rainfall reaches the maximum.

Best time to visit : The best time to visit the Aralam wildlife sanctuary is from October to June.

By Air : The nearest airport to Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is Karipur airport, located at a distance of 71 kilometers from the sanctuary.

By Rail : The nearest railway station to Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is at a distance of 35 kilometers from this sanctuary.

By Road : The Aralam wildlife sanctuary is well connected by road and can be reached from Kerala and Kannur.
